This Note is from the 5th Issue of the Fractional Currency (or Postage Currency) series.
These were first issued in 1862 as a response to the widespread hoarding of small change during the Civil War. This fifth issue features a red seal and a portrait of Treasury Secretary William M Merideth on the obverse.
Fractional Currency was circulated up until 1876 as has proved to be very popular with collectors.
