Each of these ancient Greek coins features a bust of the emperor facing right on the obverse, with Athena (liberty) holding a spear and Nike on the reverse. Ariarathes V Eusebes Philopator reigned from 163-130 BC and was the son of the preceding king Ariarathes IV. Previously called Mithridates, he reigned for 33 years as king of Cappadocia. Ariarathes V was distinguished by the excellence of his character and his cultivation of philosophy and the liberal arts.
